Yes, SVG is a valid format Joomla!
It's pretty simple to utilize the SVG format within your own Joomla! content (articles/modules/etc.). We use Inkscape to create our interactive image maps. Always remember to compress any internal jpg/png images within the svg file. Once that is done, simply use object tag specification shown in the example below:
